Southern Cross is the main town in the Shire of Yilgarn, and is situated on the main east west highway, 370 km east of Perth. Travelling east we are known as the gateway to the Eastern Goldfields, travelling west however, we are the gateway to the Eastern Wheatbelt.
The Shire of Yilgarn is 30,720 square km in area and has a population of approx. 3,000, with about 700 within the town of Southern Cross itself.
Other town sites within the Shire are Bodallin, Bullfinch, Ghooli, Koolyanobbing, Marvel Loch, Moorine Rock and Yellowdine. These townships are very small with no to little services at all and with very few people living in the towns themselves.
The Shire’s industries are a mixture of mining and agriculture and the services to support those industries.
Recent years have been tough for our farming families, with extremes of drought and frost and unseasonal rain variability.
We have also, within the past 12 months, seen the closure of one of our biggest mines, St Barbara’s Marvel Loch enterprise, and although the mine has been purchased, production is not expected to begin for a further 12 months.
Our population is aging, and this is exacerbated by a number of families moving to Perth for better educational facilities for their children.
Our community is doing it tough!
In an effort to build community spirit and to encourage visitors to our town a committee has been formed and we will be holding a Collector’s Weekend and Swap Meet over the weekend of 27 – 28 September.
Sunday’s events will primarily be taken up by a Swap Meet, being run by the local ‘Motoring Enthusiasts’, who have invited a number of vintage car / classic car / motorcycles and other motoring clubs from surrounding areas and further afield to come and join in the fun.
There will be free camping facilities available for the duration of the weekend, and for the less hardy, there are 7 hotels / motels / accommodation services available in the Shire.
Catering on Sunday begins at breakfast and ends at dinner, with a 50s, 60, 70s theme. There will be plenty food available during the day, at several outlets, as well as a number of kids activities, including pony rides, face painting and a strolling clown.
